The New Nutritious Micro-Algae Range from Estée Lauder

I’ve been using the latest Estée Lauder skincare range for a few weeks now, it’s called Nutritious Micro-Algae. These products are destined for oily and problem prone skin and are meant to purify and balance the skin.

This range is made with three algaes, spirulina, chlorella, and sugar kelp, which explains the name. It contains a cleansing bar, a cleansing jelly, a toner and a hydrating lotion.

I really like the design of this range and judging by the press release, it seemed to be the right one for my skin type. Now that I’ve used them for a while, I can tell you that three of the product will remain in my routine but one didn’t work for my skin.

Pore Purifying Cleansing Bar*, CHF 34.-

When I saw that the range contained two different cleansing products, I arbitrarily decided to have one in the shower for my morning cleanse, and one on the skin for my night time cleanse. The bar being in the shower, I mostly use it in the morning.

It’s not my favourite cleanser of the two, because I find it a bit stripping. I’ve been using very very gentle cleansers for a long time now (such as the Dr. Hauschka cleansing cream and the Lus Aqua Marina Cleanser) and I’m not sure how I feel about the squeaky clean feeling.

It’s not really drying, or terrible stripping, and if you like to feel that your skin is ‘squeaky clean’ you’ll like this cleansing bar. Personally tough, I don’t think that I like this feeling anymore. I’ll still finish this bar but I wouldn’t repurchase it.

That being said, it’s going to last me a while because a little goes a very long way (I’ve been using it for a month now and the engraving on the top is still clearly visible.)

Pore Purifying Cleansing Jelly*, CHF 34.-

So the cleansing jelly is the product that I use for my second cleanse at night, after I’ve removed my makeup. I really like this cleanser.

As opposed to the cleansing bar, the jelly doesn’t leave my skin feeling stripped or squeaky clean.

But it still leaves my skin feeling very clean. It also smells amazing and I really like to use it with my Foreo brush to get a really deep cleanse before applying my nighttime skincare.

Pore Minimizing shake Tonic*, CHF 34.-

The tonic is the only product from the range that my skin doesn’t get along with. I was immediately suspicious when I realised that it was full of alcohol.

You can smell the alcohol quite strongly when you apply the tonic, but you can also feel it on the skin, particularly if you get too close to the eye area.

That being said, I’m not necessarily against alcohol in toner seeing as my skin got along really well with the Dr Hauschka toner that had alcohol in it too (though probable less because I couldn’t smell or feel it at all). However, this tonic in particular makes my skin look quite red.

It’s supposed to reduce the appearance of pores and I didn’t notice any difference in that regard, but I definitely realised that when I was applying my makeup every morning I wanted to reach for my green primer to counteract the redness which I don’t usually do. So after using it for a month I put it aside and went back to my old toners.

Hydra-balancing Fluid Lotion*, CHF 58.-

Finally, the last product is the one that I like the most. It’s the hydrating lotion that I use day and night. I have to say that I haven’t noticed any effect on my pores but honestly I don’t think that we can do anything about that (except accept our pores the way they are.)

Other than that I really like to use that lotion because it’s really light, sinks in quickly and smells great.

At night, I add my Advanced Night Repair Serum (from Estée Lauder as well) which I’ve been using for years, and in the morning I sometimes use a hydrating serum before the lotion because my skin seems to be getting less and less oily by the day and more and more dehydrated.

But if you’re looking for a small dose of hydration, or just for a little something in addition to your serum, this lotion will be perfect for you.

All in all, I’m really happy to have discovered this new range. I think that because my skin has become slightly less oily and more dehydrated, I’m not quite the targeted skin type anymore, but I can still see that the products are really good. I’m particularly happy with the hydrating lotion and the cleansing jelly that are super nice to use and I will keep them in my routine.

The toner on the other hand has been shoved in my ‘give away to friends’ pile and the cleansing bar could potentially end up there if the next cleanser I try turns out to be better. But I don’t know that yet. What I’m trying to say is that it’s good but not incredible.

Have you tried the range ? Tempted ?
