4 Tricks to Getting Back to My Fitter Self

This is a topic that is furiously on trend (and has been for a few years now) and I’m no exception.
I’ve had my fair share of “renaissances” just like a lot of us. I’ve started numerous diets and exercise plans (you know how we do it; I’m starting this january, this birthday, this school year, etc.) but never really managed to stick to it for longer than 3 months.

So here I am again. I’m not starting a diet but I’m trying to lead a healthier lifestyle.
Exercise more often, say no to sweets every now and again and eat more fruit and veg’. Basically that’s my plan.

I’ve come up with a few tricks that should help me stick to this new lifestyle.

1. To help me eat more fruit and veg’ I bought myself a blender (see my post on glowing skin) that makes it effortless to add 2-3 portions to my usual intake.

2. To help me run I downloaded an app (Runkeeper) that keeps pestering me if I don’t go for a run.

3. To keep me motivated I involve friends. One of them is using the same app as me and we can see each other’s “progress”. We’re kind of making fun of each other’s stats instead of congratulating each other but the effect is the same: we run !
I also made plans with my uni friends to go to some sport classes together.
I think that it’s really important to involve friends if you want to stick to an exercise routine (that way you can drag each other on bad days.) Although I must say that going to exercise classes with one friend in particular meant that we often ended up in a restaurant eating crepes instead of sweating in our sports gear but that’s part of the fun too ! (right ?)

4. I bought new gear. It’s just like when I write notes for my blog posts; I don’t want to do it on any loose piece of paper, I need a nice notebook. So I bought myself a nice pair of trainers and I’m really happy to use them.

I know this list doesn’t look like much but it really helps to put everything on your side to keep yourself motivated.

Clarins Lip Balm Crayon or Dior Lip Glow ?

I’m not really one to sport a bright lipstick that’s why on a day to day basis I tend to go for very neutral, slightly there, your-lips-but-better shades. I also have quite dry lips and need my lippies to be moisturizing.
Naturally this led me to fall head over heels in love with these 3 balmy-pinky-shiny lip products.
They’re moisturizing, add a bit of shine and react with your lips ph (I think) to give you a unique shade.

But are they the same ? Which one should you pick ? Clarins Lip Balm Crayon in My Pink or Dior Lip Glow ? Is L’Oréal Studio Secrets Universal Lip Glow a drugstore alternative ?
Let’s compare !

The price : Dior : ~23.50£ | Clarins : ~18£ | L’Oréal : ~8£ (prices may vary depending on offers and retailers. These are just an indication)

The best smelling : Clarins. Hands down. It has a delicious sweet scent (The Man told me my lips tasted delicious and that’s important too right ?!) ! The L’Oréal one is not really scented and the Dior one also has a sweet scent (a lot less noticeable) but it is a bit minty at the same time.

The shiniest : I don’t know. I compared them in different lighting, swatched them on my lips and hands and I don’t know. They’re pretty much equally shiny. They’re not as shiny as a gloss but they definitely have a subtle shine.

The balmiest : The Dior one feels like it’s a bit thicker and when you rub your lips together it doesn’t glide that easily (but it’s definitely not sticky) while the other two feel just like lips balms.

The prettiest colour : They are very similar and very natural. The only difference is that the Dior one has a slightly more orangey shade (still pink but with a slight orange hue).

The longest lasting : Depends if you want the balmy effect or the colour. The balmy effect of the Dior one lasts a bit longer maybe because it’s thicker (while the other two last about the same as a lip balm) but colour wise Clarins is the longest lasting. It has a slight staining power that outlasts the shiny balmy effect.

The prettiest packaging :  Do we even need to discuss this ?! I mean sure the gold detailing on the Clarins crayon makes it better than all the other crayons and the pink ring on the L’oréal one is nice. But in my opinion nothing beats that drop-dead gorgeous Dior packaging. Look at it ! I mean really ! Look at it !

The Verdict : I think that my favourite of the three is the Clarins Lip Balm Crayon because of the scent and the staining power that means that even after a while you won’t have bare lips. But if I’m completely honest they’re not that different. Make your choice according to your budget because it’s the only real difference in my opinion. The L’Oréal one doesn’t have the luxe/treat factor but it performs just as well. The other two make for really nice gifts (for your loved ones or yourself).

Feeling Grey ? 3 Ways to Help You Glow !

My skin has been looking rather dull lately. I look at myself in the mirror and find myself wondering “why do I look so grey ?!”
I decided it was time to do something to change that. My plan has 3 steps.

1. Food : The first step is that I want to make sure that I eat enough veg’ and fruits. Beauty starts from within they say. So I start my morning with a smoothie. The one on the above picture is frozen mixed berries with a bit of water and milk to make it a bit less thick (sometimes I like to add a spoonful of honey). I use my Breville Blender because it makes it effortless and really quick. I like to use frozen fruits because it makes the drink extremely fresh (you may find yourself with ice cream if you don’t use enough non-frozen ingredients as the fruits are actually cold enough to freeze the milk and water you add). I feel like if I eat bright things my skin will be brighter as well (though it may not work as well with bright yellow M&Ms…)

2. Skincare : The second step is quite obvious. I want to make sure that I’m using the proper skincare products. I don’t have that problem very often (I have other problems with my skin though, trust me) so I’m not really equipped to deal with it but I managed to find three products that should help me without having to go to the shop.
I decided to use my Alpha H Liquid Gold more frequently to help the cells turnover. I’ve been using it for about two years now and I love it but I’m going to start using it more often again (every other day).
I chose the Soap&Glory Scrub Your Nose in It scrub/mask because it says on the packaging that it “leaves skin looking brighter and more radiant” and that’s exactly what I want. It has very fine and extremely effective gritty bits if you use it as a scrub but if you use it as a mask it will leave your skin feeling very fresh and thoroughly cleansed.
Last but not least I went rummaging through my mum’s drawer and I found this Bio Beauté by Nuxe Vitamin-Rich Detox Mask. The bright packaging and product inside and the fact that it’s full of vitamin and made with orange water made me believe that it would help. It has the look and the consistency of honey. It feels slightly tingly on the skin but I’m pretty sure I can see results already.

3. Faking it : While you’re waiting for the nutrients and your improved skincare routine to do the trick the only way to get your glow back is to fake it. I have two products that I really like to use to make my face look more healthy. The first one is The Body Shop Honey Bronzer in 01 and the Estée Lauder Illuminating Powder Gelée Blush in 01 Tease (sadly limited edition. EL you need to bring it back ! If you don’t own it another pinky slightly highlighty blush can do the trick) I like this bronzer to use all over the face and then the EL blush is lovely to add a hint of colour and glow to the cheeks.

A Little Alpine Get Away

What to do on a sunny day ? Go for a walk !
I’m not talking about a nice walk in the nearby park. Oh no no no. What I mean is a serious countryside or mountain hiking type of walk.
Why I hear you ask ?
Well … This is where things can get tricky. Personally it’s always been something my parents would force me and my brother to do and we would complain the whole time.
But last week when one of my friend from France came to visit Switzerland I thought that we had to go for a walk in the mountain (living the cliché).
Our motto was “go big or go home” so we went on a 6 hours walk that took us 2735m above sea level.

It was difficult, long and painful the next day but when we asked ourselves “was it worth it ? our answer was “YES” !
Here’s why :
1. The views : When you go mountain hiking the views are absolutely breathtaking and usually there is no other way to see these landscapes (except if you own a helicopter maybe) It’s the same when you go for a walk in the forest or the country side. You’ll always find something beautiful to see (and it might be a lot closer to your home than you expected).
2. Reaching your goal : I think it is absolutely vital to have a goal when you go for a walk. Ours was a little stone house at the top (almost) of the mountain (you can sort of see a red roof on the last picture). It is so satisfying to finally reach it and reward yourself to a delicious bowl of tea or hot chocolate and a slice of pie. Yum !
3. The reward : Yep that’s what we did. When you do something like that you really feel like you’ve accomplished something and a good thing to do is to treat yourself. There’s of course the aforementionned tea and pie but what I’m talking about is a more serious reward. We went to the thermal baths nearby the next day and I’m telling you the warm water felt even better on our aching muscles than it would have otherwise. A day at the spa if you don’t have thermal baths nearby is a good option as well.

You could of course simply treat yourself to a day at the spa but just try to do something big before you go to the spa next and you’ll see how much better it feels afterwards !

And Then I Went to Boots (Haul)

I promise this is the last haul post for a while (this is a promise to myself as well) but as I had the chance  to be in the UK I couldn’t not go to Boots !

My excuse is that I had to stock up on the Soap&Glory One Heck of a Blot powder, the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer and the Batiste dry shampoo as I can’t find them at home (and pretty much can’t live without them anymore).

But of course I got sucked in by fairly new products (Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain in 010 LA exclusive (which sounds really promising)) and by things I wanted to try and happened to stumble upon (Revlon Parfumerie Scented Nail Enamel in China Flower , Rimmel Kate Lipstick in 08, Charles Worthington Volume&Bounce texturising spray (I’m expecting wonders from that one), Yes to Grapefruit brightening facial wipes (totally blaming Lily Pebbles for that one) and finally Bumble and Bumble The Surf Set (because as I said in my “mini haul of minis” I want to try this brand).

I have absolutely no excuse but … look how lovely !
